Wow, where do you find black hummingbirds?
Here in the Front Range CO above 8000 ft there are hummingbirds who have a call that sounds like little silver bells ringing, it's absolutely intoxicating.
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan we get ruby throat hummers. We have hand feeders that sometimes a female will visit. The males are very territorial and run all the others off the feeders.
I've got a lot to learn, I didn't even know there were actual hand feeders just for that purpose. I've just seen some people with birds perched or eating outta their hands and thought they must have a little Snow White in them😅
Awhile. Also hummers are most active at your feeders in the morning and evening. I started by filling the hand feeder and just sitting it out near the larger feeder. I like to sit outside in the morning and have coffee and they come by and say hi while I’m sitting there. Be patient and sit still 👍
The Hummers would come & spit on the window to let us know the feeders were empty
The hummingbird spit is some kind of indestructible glue, requiring a razorblade to remove
At our peak we were going through 50#'s of sugar per month for 4 feeders

I'm in the middle of a cross country move and the 1st thing I'm gonna do when I get to the new place is get a feeder and a hand feeder!😊
That’s so awesome! I had a hummingbird at my place that three times when carrying their feeder one would fly up, land on the feeder while I was still carrying it
I had a jewel green with a red throat that would land on my hand when I lived in South Texas, but she was camera shy, I could never get a pic. It did make me feel like I was a decent being!
I fostered an abandoned nest. Lol, the mother had made it on a palm frond and it was in a very precarious position. We had lots of rain/wind that season and I'm out there, setting up protections, feeding those hungry chicks while it's pouring rain and windy. They both made it and flew away!
This is amazing. I used to foster hummingbirds back in California and to have them swarming you this way, sitting on your legs, arms, or clutching your fingers with their tiny feet is a very joyful experience.
I've fed hummers for years. None of my feeders have had a 'perch' until this yr. What a difference! Instead of having to fly in place while drinking, they have a seat & relax & drink much more. Watching them is even more enjoyable now becos they stay much longer. Less territorial too.
The Hummingbird only exists in the Americas. It should have been the National Bird, Ben Franklin's Wild Turkey notwithstanding. Wild Turkey is for sipping. What are these Hummers? Species?
Same. I only know the variety that comes to visit my feeders. I'd google it, but I've learned over the years that if I share what I find, a bunch of people will come to yell at me that I'm wrong 😂
Yeah, the internet's relative anonymity has been irresistible to antisocial personalities from it's inception. My theory is it brings it out in people that would otherwise be civil. All bullies are cowards. If they're in any real danger, they get courteous real fast.
I used to try and reason with people. Now I just roll my eyes and block people that are rude - to me or anyone else. I don't treat people like that, ever. I'll always be kind.
Weirdly, one of the most courteous and respectful groups of humans are serving life in the penitentiary. There is something about being surrounded by others with nothing to lose, to tone down a criminal's act.
Without the backstory I can assure you it's literally true, these little charmers saved my life in Seattle. 100 years ago Anna's were no further North than Southern Oregon. I love that. I was amazed when I saw a hummingbird migration map a couple of years ago and realized how many varieties of hummingbirds could be found in that area.
