It’s happened again. If you’re “high profile” with an expensive lawyer, you can have your name kept secret. Not if you’re some 19yr old knockabout kid from the Western suburbs, though. This has got to stop.

Agree. But my unpopular opinion is that no one should be named of any crime until they are found guilty (but I do understand that making it public can encourage others to come fwd).
True. But if I was wrongly accused, had my name/face in the media and was acquitted, I’d feel aggrieved. Mud often sticks, even if you’re found not guilty.
Using the term knockabout kid her suggests being a larrikin, which is suggest is not appropriate if you're accused of rape. It's like pointing out the man was a good sportsman or school captain
Yes double standard but we don't want to keep using tropes that minimise the seriousness of rape either
Think many are aware of his identity! I’d say he wanted suppression to avoid many others coming out of the woodwork while the trial is in progress- similar to the flood that happened with Jones.
Yep. And to that I add rape and DV trials should be held before a panel of experts not juries. I firsthand experienced as a juror how a compete lack of education (and bro club attitudes) led to a not guilty verdict despite compelling evidence. One bro said “yeah he’s violent but she’s a liar”
Absolutely. I was furiously scrawling notes during this trial about this and spoke at length to a friend who is a lawyer about it afterwards. She wrote one of her first assignments at law school about this being crucial for any meaningful justice to take place especially in SA and gendered violence
Definitely, I taught about the use of the jury for decades. The jury was always a contentious topic. Often on VCE exams as a major question for years. 12 Angry Men great movie to see how peers can get it wrong or Joh's jury. Many aren't skilled enough to follow a trial.
And the presiding Supreme Court judge also has just stepped down as he was found guilty of violently assaulting, then stalking his partner (happening at the same time he was presiding over this case) Being on that jury was so deeply frustrating and eye opening.
There should be an independent panet have abused the to assess those AVO's that their are routinely brought by women who have used Australian men to gain citizenship & defrauded those that were sponsoring the people into the country. They also hide prior psychiatric treatment in their home country!
The rape myths which abound in society, thanks in part to tabloid ‘titillation’ reporting, enter the jury room inside jurors’ heads. As you discovered. Understanding experts needed. French style.
Agree. Wealthy men (and I’d hazard a guess also white) have so much advantage in rape trials. A certain case in Toowoomba demonstrates that too - it’s been such a dragged out process. It’s no wonder women are so reluctant to press charges.
Or a DUI cop who crashes a cop car and gets a 40 year suppression on his identity. The rich guy with the expensive lawyer I can sort of understand, but how does the cop’s name get suppressed for 40 years?

I grew up in Bankstown area and got 'kicked in the teeth' & reminded more than once about being a Westie.

Enough with the double standards!
Just as an aside, does the ABC no longer edit articles before they're published?
'the pair allegedly *drunk alcohol'
That should say *drank
As I learned in primary school, when used as a verb, words like *drunk 'need a helper' eg had
Rant over
Open justice is actually a fundamental part of the system that aids fair trials.
@aushumanrightsact.bsky.social
unless you don't drink
When are these Judges going to thing with their heads instead of their penises
Yes double standard but we don't want to keep using tropes that minimise the seriousness of rape either
