I think if I had cancer I'd want to spend the rest of my my life with my family and not in congress with those assholes. He could have easily endorsed someone to run in his stead.
I'm sure he was lovely. The point is people shouldn't have important legislative roles when they're literally at deaths door, and have long been too old to keep up with the changing world around us. That's not a healthy democracy.
Knowing his own health condition, he purposefully chose to stand in the way of progressives to ensure that Democrats continue to not stand for anything in the face of Trump. That is not a very fine person, that is in fact a terrible human.
"Relatively new american" hey here's some advice from a guy doing this American thing his whole life: politicians are not your friends. This guy stuck around when he KNEW he had cancer that could kill him while in office and did not do the right thing and find someone with similar values to endorse.
I'm gonna be real with you, I don't think you're an asshole or anything, I just think you fundamentally don't get why people are making jabs at him. Some people are making jokes that aren't really about him but about dem leadership. Some are frustrated that he took a senior role while old w/cancer-
You mentioned the possibility of a Republican getting the seat; at least Gerry kept that from happening for a few days. He reprinted my family well for years, championing gun control, and women’s rights, among other issues
I understand the ramifications, I just think it can be expressed in a more kind, less Twitter+like rant (I’m not talking about you.) I can understand bad feelings for Pelosi, and I share them, but not for Gerry.
Some are upset that he didn't choose to pass down his work onto someone who can continue it when he passes. ALL the people making jabs are mad that there is now gonna be a spot to fill that potentially a republican can snipe. People have real reasons to be upset.
I'm sure he was fine until he decided to become a seat warmer and refused to step down even though he was going through complicated medical treatment and not fulfilling his Congressional duties. This is his legacy. Not whatever you're imagining.
"A damn fine one" is they were even half way decent they would not have continued running as a politician in such older age AND especially not after the cancer diagnosis.
Dying in office is not inspirational. It's shows the rotting geriatric government we have of people refusing to let go of power.
He was a dying man who held onto power until his literal last breath instead of ceding power to the next generation. Those generally aren't the good guys
He was a very fine, very old, very sick, very terminal Congressman and I'm glad he's leaving his seat empty at this critical time of rising fascism in our nation. I hope we can find an old terminally ill cancer patient to take his place soon 🙏

it’s a fine line but those nasty comments are moreso directed at nancy pelosi and the gerontocracy
damn that would be a good name for a band 🤔

Now it is another crisis for Team Blue.
