This member preserves very few benthic organisms thanks to largely anoxic conditions at the bottom. Certain layers preserve quite a bit of plant material from the early forests that grew on the near by land.

The Cleveland shale was deposited during a major, but brief cold snap in Earth' history. Besides some major extincts it means for this image that the nearby glaciers, from the Appalachians, rafted ice into this area, leaving drop stones and other evidence of this icy climate behind.

Dunkleosteus is the most famous inhabitant of the shale but it wasn't even the largest animal here. Other placoderms reached similar sizes but a little known Ctenathancus species from here probably grew significantly larger, as you can see in this size chart by @seismic-shrimp.bsky.social

Between Dunkleosteus, Gorgonichthys, and this large Ctenacanthus (no matter exactly how large it was, it must’ve pretty big in any case), this ecosystem is fascinating just for how many large predators it had.
