i think he learned how to bottle stuff up as a kid. we see him hiding his feelings from Ed in 1x5 too. Ed clocks him as jealous but he isn't, he's upset that Ed is seemingly siding with Stede's bullies over his friendship with Stede. I imagine since Ed clocked him then, he held it in more with Jack
