When I was a kid I thought “drinking and driving” applied to ANY drink, so every time my dad took a Diet Coke with him on the road I was absolutely mortified…(1/2)

As a mom whose teen (many yrs ago) was on life-support for 4 days (6 skull fractures, punctured lung, etc.) after a DUI accident, my heart is breaking for you. I am, however, incredibly glad that you made it through all of that safely.
(Side-note: my daughter, happily, is healthy & doing well now)
My Mom used to as well. Particularly on holidays. There's nothing like driving home from grandma's on Xmas Eve, wondering if you'll die.
I forgive her as an adult, knowing all that I know now. As a child, I was terrified.
Then I found out it meant ALCOHOLIC drinks, so I felt like an idiot. Then I found out those cans of Diet Coke always had a few shots of whiskey in them, so I was absolutely mortified again, and that is but one little rollercoaster in the theme park that was my childhood.
Was it your mothers influence on your upbringing that caused you to be mortified? Or was it school or some other outside influence. Have you now adopted your fathers mindset about shots in your diet coke?
You are exactly right.
Having 38 years of sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous, & with a father who was an alcoholic who never embraced sobriety, I used to hide my liquor in juice bottles.
We have a unique way of rationalizing & justifying the most outrageous behavior.

Nothing more fun than riding home from school (on the highway) helmetless on the back of my Dad's motorcycle, especially when we got to stop for pool and a couple of beers (for him) before making the trip.
LMAO! I actually tattled on my mom in kindergarten for doing just that!! They called us in and when I told them she drank from a can all the time, she had to show them I meant DC. 🤣🤣🫣
