Can teachers choose when they strike, should they decide to do so? I’m thinking a strike in June would have much less effect than one in September. It might mess up June diploma exams since most of them are graded by teachers, but I’m guessing Alberta Ed would just exempt students from writing them.

I believe Alberta requires a 2-week cooling off period after mediation.

Once a contract has expired, the union members can vote to approve job action.

The union doesn't have to then immediately initiate job action if negotiations are ongoing. It can be delayed if they're still at the table.

Something like 2.5% a year for 4 years. Teachers were something like 34% in the hole after 15 years badly lagging behind inflation and almost no raises.

Salary is far down the list. Classroom conditions including large class sizes, unsupported special needs and ELL students, unmanageable work load, escalating bullying/violence from students and parents are all big issues. UCP is ruining our once world class public education system.
