Fundamentalism is incompatible with the idea of democracy, and therefore our ideal of America. Whether Muslim or Christian, the idea of supremacy and therefore compulsory observation of a religion is a contradiction for the stated principle of equality. No theocracy will ever truly be free for all.
The shitty part of this statement is that Islam SAVED large portions of western civilization. Without the preservation of priceless bits of ancient knowledge by the various Musilm civilizations we wouldn't have achieved the enlightenment.
Wrong. Problem is with extreme sects of all religions! Ultra-orthodox sects tend to be male-dominated and subordinate women severely restricting their dress, mobility, occupation, education, physical safety, social contact, speech, etc. That goes for extreme Christian, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews.
Its like people don't realize we are all trapped on the same space rock that is hurtling itself at millions of miles per minute around a giant ball of furious flaming gas. That is itself, navigating our entire solar system into the gaping mouth of a black hole in the center of our galaxy.
I'm an atheist , but I believe in tolerance. Believe what you want. I don't have to agree with religious beliefs, but if they aren't forced on me, they won't offend me. Many foolish people believe Muslim people are a race. They are not, but racism sucks also.
Thank goodness Islam felt that religious liberty was compatible with it when The Kingdom of Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States after it declared independence from the English crown.
