This is part of the reason that pointing out hypocrisy is useless, a circular game to keep liberals busy playing with each other. They never mean anything they say, that’s their whole thing.

Miriam, I agree, and I think that the cynicism on display is not unique to the far right. I worry that our public culture (across the pol. spectrum) has grown reflexively cynical and suspicious to the point where maintaining any ideals, publicly, is taken as a sign of low intelligence or suckerdom.

I think there's something interesting to be said about print culture vs. digital culture around expectations of truth. I remember Benjamin talking about the huge difference when politicians stopped addressing constituents directly and started addressing the camera.
