Yeah! His dad beat the crap out of him until he could paint amazingly. Also Disney hated Maurice Nobel because of the Union stuff so he didn't advertise his work too much. Nobel got more fame at WB doing Looney Tunes BGs.

Not sure about Earle's specific influences on these, but this type of flat, mid-century style was popular at the time. Disney decided to fully embrace it for this film.

Oh I'm sure. I was thinking literally today about Milt Kahl's work and wondering what his influence's were. Alot of us folks working in animation look to those guys, I'd love someone to put together a resource on who was inspiring them.
