Yeah I mean the concept of making kids do something to build character (i.e., because you don’t feel like doing it) is sound he just took it to an unacceptable extreme

"Hey, I don't know, let's figure this out together," even if it's obvious that you already know & are going to make them do the work, at least puts you on the same team.

The problem was that he ACTUALLY created a social puzzle (How do I get dad to stop withholding beans?) & refused to recognize it.

right and i basically don't agree with using food or affection as a reward or withholding it any more than you'd use like, medical care or warm socks. that stuff is off limits. incentive could be, like, a matchbox car

When I'm doing math with my kids I get them to solve the bit they know how to then help explain the principles/rules that get to the answer and always have them explain how and why we did those steps after so they understand. Bean dads heart was in the right place but his methods were questionable
