I don’t believe it is unconscious though. I think they know exactly what they are doing. I think individual humans are capable of unconscious projection. But when a group is doing it, it is totally intentional.

Thanks for presenting the psych definition of projection! It is often conflated with “gaslighting” in popular culture. The major difference here is that those with mental health disorders “project” for defined, disordered reasons. Gaslighting is done for all kinds of reasons, especially political.

That’s a great summation of projection - the thoughts are too painful or embarrassing or dangerous to embrace so they are “felt” by experiencing them through someone else’s (usually false) “experiences”
