I get what you're saying, with this feeling like a 'no true Scotsman' fallacy. But 'Christian', is just a self identity thing. Following the teachings of Jesus could technically be a whole different thing though.
“The teachings of Jesus” is pretty much whatever any Xtian decides for themselves. There is no single “right way” to be Xtian. Some say Jesus taught them to cross a continent to murder Jews and Muslims, some say the Bible says “murder abortion provider. Those are real Xtians too.
Xtianity =/= Good
“Teachings of Jesus” in the Bible are written 4 different ways by 4 authors who don’t agree (the gospels) and explained by Paul who never met Jesus and disagreed about everything with Jesus’ disciples (the epistles). It is entirely possible to justify all kinds of things as teachings of Jesus.
