Can I excuse my typos/weird grammar with the fact that my dad decided to DIY some shelves and used some godawful paint on them and the fumes are spectacular?
I tend to recommend worsted weight cotton or cotton/acrylic yarns for beginners so a 4.5 or 5mm hook (check the label of your yarn). (US sizes just to be confusing: G or H, 7or 8? I think?)
Stay far, far away from fancy yarns and dark colours.
You want to be able to see your stitches clearly at the beginning. As for the type of hook - cheap acrylic ones are usually fine if you’re just giving it a try. If you end up doing more, steel hooks with a nice grip are good to work with.

I know I need this size a lot b/c over the years I've bought one whenever I couldn't find the one I had; I now own about 15 size H hooks...
Same gauge, roughly, as H crochet hooks.
