This Cinco de Mayo, we’re celebrating the contributions of our Mexican and Mexican-American neighbors, the bonds between our great countries, and the shared values of liberty and democracy.

It seems like America could be celebrating but instead they voted poorly and they’re forced to hide so they aren’t mistakingly sent to a foreign gulag without due process. All Dems need to do more, be louder, be bolder… and push gop to grow spines
He stole the election. Repeatedly admits it. Notice how we’re not storming the capital and smearing 💩 on the walls. We’re storming the ballot box flipping GOP seats every week. We’re picketing #Teslatakedown Elon’s stock is crashed. We’re holding #handsoff rallies and #emptychair town halls.
A fitting celebration for the moment since Cinco de Mayo celebrates the battle of Puebla, where the Mexicans routed the French, intent on creating themselves a new colony in the continent. :)
Maybe, given your president's desire to send the US Army into Mexico (again), worth remembering that the date celebrates a battle in which outnumbered Mexican forces defeated an earlier invading imperial army.
Why do Americans feast on tacos, fajitas & margaritas when most don't know the meaning of CdMayo & trump/GOPers want to defeat & deport the "rapists & murderers (no disrespect) Poll & see why they're celebrating the Mexican army's defeat of the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862-clueless

I think it’s gone into the pantheon of ubiquitous cultural celebrations.
Like… you can drink green beer on St Patrick’s Day without having any strong opinions about Catholic persecution in Northern Ireland during The Troubles.
People wanted some sort of Mexican cultural holiday here in the US. Much like Columbus Day or St. Patrick's day the logic behind it is tenuous. So what?
I get the instinct for it, and I don’t think you’re entirely wrong, but, at the same time, it would be a sort of cultural flattening to do so.
In a longer statement, sure, name the pall hanging over everyone here who is or appears anything other than white. In a tweet, simply love thy neighbor.
I want these kinds of statements because they’re reminders of how we can be— not trying to pull one over on each other, but celebrating each other. Enriched by each other.
They’re a country we were working toward; a country we squandered.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply that has added an extra dimension to Governor Walz's words. I don't often see someone still have faith in our better angels. That kind of faith and respect is contagious and will help to defend your country in these turbulent times. As we say in Canada, #ElbowsUp
Ummm Cinco de Mayo is only observed and barely at that, in Pueblo. This because the Mexicans defeated the French there in the 1800's. No where else in the entire country is this even a thing.
My MAGA father gets extremely upset that the Mexican flag shows up in the news on American soil. This is because he wants to be angry. He should not be angry at Mexico. He should be angry at the U.S. corporations that push it. Or better still just be happy that something fun makes some people happy.

Please celebrate responsibly.
You did not get the Mayo
Can you work on homelessness and poverty?
There, it's minor as compared to a few other holidays.

We are stronger when we march together 🦋✌️
Every governor needs to be urging every Congress member and Senator to do so on a daily basis.

One aspires to the worst of our history— fear, fanaticism, and greed.
One aspires to the ideals of our founding— hope, justice, and liberty.
We’ve never reached those ideals, but the virtue is in the striving.
They’re a country we were working toward; a country we squandered.
They’re a country worth fighting for.
And I hope someday, not too far off, that my country can be a good friend to yours again.
