Don’t call yourself an historian if you celebrate the destruction of history.

Louisiana had laws protecting slaves from death and injury. Planters would fire and sue overseers who abused their slaves

Clearly, someone doesn’t understand that the building was *historic* and not “history” itself. All things will die. History is about knowing and understanding our past. The destruction of a slaveholder’s mansion doesn’t mean we understand its historic significance any less.

So Louisiana had laws that allowed slave-owners to sue but not slaves to sue. The slave-owners pocketed any damages courts ordered paid; no damages were awarded to slaves, who were treated like oxen. That made America great? Explains Trump if nothing else.

I'd like to see statues of confederate generals beaten and bruised, kneeling in the mud holding flags of surrender, while formerly enslaved people stand above them, throwing off their chains and rejoicing.

More symbolic than literal, but I'd like to see monuments like that in every city.
