Led Zeppelin’s talent and daring went way beyond the capabilities of the headbanging deadweights who hung off the group’s example, James Wood writes. “Its violence tore things apart which its musicianship put back together.”

The thing is, and i love Jimmy Page’s shredding, that dude couldn’t play his own riffs 80% of the time; Bonham was playing to his own rhythm half the time; and the only person in the right key was Robert Plant. Some of their live performances are jarring af.
Drugs and alcohol are tough on performers. My guess was that John Paul Jones was consistently the only one on key and on time. Jimmy Page was great when he was at his best, he didn't seem to be at his best much from the bootlegs and others I've heard.
Coincidentally, yesterday I saw Robert Plant perform live in Amsterdam. As a 76-year-old rock hero who for once does not rely on his old glory but makes beautiful music with his friends of Saving Grace. For Led Zeppelin songs you have to go into the archives the king is still alive.
Saw them at the Forum during my hippie years. They played their set 3 times because they were ending their tour. People would throw Dixie cups with drugs on stage. Robert Plant noticed arrests so he started the whole arena stomping their feet until the police released them and the police did.
