I found out the real meaning a few years back and I'm not happy about it at all so I am going to continue to believe it was just doing a bit of piggy shopping
See, I think children's nursery rhyme books play into this. I'm *sure* it's always illustrated with little piggy taking his bag for life and cheerfully waving goodbye to his chums.
I have a very strong visual memory of a colourful, cheery illustration which looked exactly like this, rather than piggy hanging in the back of a Luton

It was only a couple of years ago that I inadvertently let the cat out of the bag about why said lamb was going to the market.
