That our democracy is not an outgrowth of a monarchy brought down by a catastrophic conflict that we were also responsible for, I think gives us an edge.

Not to mention, I think our institutions are quite a bit more resilient as a result, and people tend to like things in theory, but don’t like seeing it on their TV news.
Also we haven't had a national humiliation of having territory removed and a ban on building arms etc. Nor a catastrophic recession where it was cheaper for kids to play with bundles of notes instead of building blocks.
Not to make light of the current moment, but can you imagine the violence of the 1960’s today? People need to dive deep into that lake. It’s genuinely frightening.
