Maybe it's the specific demographic. But it could also be a sign that people want "safe spaces" from the constant terror of uncertainty. I have family in the US and they are literally just blind eyeing life now. Easier to do for the oppressor class I guess.
Oh, I see. Anything “intended to draw attention to international, political or other similar events, causes or conflicts” are banned to not “detract from the experience of other fans.” I would think that would apply to signs or banners not personal attire.
Toronto Home opener? fan kicked out for wearing a pro-Canada hat?
I'd be demanding the apology include tickets to a weeks worth of games, and play off vouchers, if the Blue Jays get that far.
Fantastic point. At least he didn’t exercise his fifth amendment rights, the last thing people want to do in the current political climate is to build any bridges.
I agree with you! The most disturbing thing is there was only one. Supposedly a lot of people bought these hats. Where are they? Let’s get visible folks! I don’t have one- but buying two!
As a Canadian, I resent the implication that toronto *baseball* fans are a fair metric for the rest of us, who reasonably, don't give a fuck about baseball
I wouldn't take the home opener crowd as anything close to a representation of Canada or even Jays fans tbh. Haven't been to one in a while but the ones I did go to were full of dude bros who just wanted to get drunk and make fools of themselves.
Can confirm. Went to a game last year and two dudes were arguing because one was so obnoxious, drunk, and swearing around children. Completely ruined the game for me.
Brutal. I remember one home opener I was at where these two dudes were yelling and swearing and then accused me of not being a "real fan" because I was sitting there quietly.
I asked them what the score was. They didn't know. It shut them up for a while.
Yesterday, people on the Jays sub on Reddit reported that security walked around telling people not to boo the US national anthem, and took photos of those who persisted in doing so. As a hardcore fan, I won't be subscribing to Sportsnet or attending games this season.
Tickets are expensive. They are often perks for execs so I'm not sure how many middle class or lower income folks can afford season tickets. Just speculating.
I absolutely agree with the hat, but the ballpark policy says nothing political and the hat is, so I don’t think they were wrong kicking him out if he didn’t want to remove it. That being said they need to find a way to revise their policies.
Oh, this could cause them, so, so, soooooo much pain.
But for the fact that it's Rogers' policy to not allow political stuff, 100% guaranteed that someone got fired.
The Jays actually were pretty clever in dissuading people from booing by 1) having a Rickey Henderson tribute immediately before, and 2) getting the wonderful cast and kids of the Lion King to sing the anthems in an absolutely kickass arrangement that blew us all away.
As an American, please boo every time our anthem is played or anyone tries to celebrate our country for any reason. We are an embarrassment and deserve to be reminded until we do something about it.
I think we do Americans a disservice by not letting them know how pissed off we are. Their president and his administration are inflicting generational damage on our relationship with the US. Many Americans seem oblivious to this fact. We owe them a boo as well.
I'm an O's fan and an embarrassed American. I think we were all expecting the TOR fans to boo the anthem mercilessly yesterday. Trust me, those of us who care about what Canadians think absolutely know how pissed off you are, as you should be. Those that don't care already are unreachable cultists.
As an aside, I was in town last April and took in the Jays' home opener. The fans sitting around me were lovely and I enjoyed our conversations. Of course, that was while we had a normal president. It's unfathomable that of all countries to alienate, he picks Canada. Canada! It's insane.
Been to a couple Raptors games recently where the booing was as raw as the deep feelings of betrayal we feel. It was a little less because of the Rickey H tribute (he was beloved by my generation) and great singing. I suspect future US anthems won’t be as cordially received till this is over.
Just sit during their anthem...is absolute silence...with some great placards....never 51....your president is a moron...boycott Tesla....no.words...no boos...just silence
Your sentiments are admirable but are also completely pointless.
Trump's MAGA "base" voters are not only unbelievably stupid and ignorant, but more importantly, they are stupefyingly insular. They simply don't watch anything but far-Right propaganda. They are beyond "trying to reason with".

Rogers Centre Fuck off eh!
If he showed up wearing a “Fuck Trump” hat, maybe
In no uncertain terms we're saying "bugger off, Canada is not for sale".

Any questions?

Just doing their jobs.
Just following orders.

Bankrupt them for the bigotry.
These corrupt, traitorous a**holes are eager to persecute other Canadian citizens to avoid upsetting Mad King Donald.
