Also, if you did have a passport issued to you before you turned 18 it's considered a child passport (there is one exception but still you can't renew that one either). You can't renew that, but you can use it for identification.

Ive got a passport that expires next year, need to change both name and gender marker. Caveat is im travelling out of country next month, so i REALLY dont want to have to renew by mail

Okay, so this one is a little trickier. You want your passport to be good for six months out from travel. Depending on when it expires (assuming Jan 1 2026) you will need to renew early. At this point, you need to do an emergency passport appointment at your local passport authority office.

The name change form is only good within six months of getting a passport, so you would technically have to fill out the DS-11 and get a new passport.

This is a link that kind of breaks it down. If you live in a Trans friendly area, and have a trans friendly house rep, bother them about it. Legit have seen passports get overnighted once a rep is involved.

If you can make it to the passport agency in person you can get it same day, too. They'll ask for proof you're traveling within the next two weeks, but a refundable Amtrak ticket to Canada (for example, a $50 ticket from Seattle to Vancouver) will do the trick.

There aren't any passport agencies that aren't appointment only as far as I'm aware near me. Passport expires May of next year, and currently I'm travelling out of country using my current passport on July 4th for 3 weeks.

You will need to do a DS-11 due to name change, which is fine, bring your old documents. You don't need to do the name change form because it's only good within six months of getting a passport and needing the change.
