A teeth whitening brand is currently plastering Melbourne trams with the slogan, ‘Make the White Choice’. And look I just don’t think they’ve thought this through.

As an American, I can proudly say that I have no neon teeth.
Also, when I was in Adelaide in 2002 I distinctly remember seeing a brand of toothpaste with a brightly smiling aboriginal in a top hat as the logo. It was called Darkie's Tooth Paste. They've been doing this crap a while.
It could be they thought it through; the reality is that more and more people dare to be openly racist an white supremacists.
They could be trying to appeal to this particular audience.
They thought it through, I guarantee it. White folks love "clever" 🙄 racism like this and all the faux plausible deniability it comes with.
Watch as white folks over there start saying "Make the white choice" outside of dental context and then try to claim they were innocently referring to this ad.
As a stateside seppo, it threw me sideways a bit when DH & I noticed a "White King" ad on the backside of an AFL game during broadcast, I wanna say W Bulldogs? Like, Mr. Clean is bald & dating Barbados Slim, you really gonna try to one up that earring? Ohkeekaybee...
I love that there exists a place where marketers and client companies green light such because racism is such an ugly thought that it never occurred to them that it could be interpreted poorly. I’m sure some problems exist, but not the levels we have had to deal with. Kind of refreshing.
We were making sugar skulls for Days of the Dead at an art studio and hunting powdered egg whites at the store. My ex popped up laughing with a brand called, "Whites Only." Again, marketing genius is everywhere
I applaud the positive election result in Australia. At the same time I know there are millions of folks who would bring back the "white Australia" policy in a heartbeat.
Nah. I’ve worked as a copywriter on big brands and I can guarantee they have been briefed to ‘empower people to gain white teeth confidence’ or some such nonsense.
Why give them the benefit of the doubt? You realize white people can and do knowingly engage in racist shit that is problematic, right?
Ads like this are plainly racist and they know what they're doing. Reminds me of white boys saying words that rhyme with the n-word and then feigning ignorance.
Yeah it’s racist and possibly with intent but generally brands just want to sell shit and I don’t think the white supremacist market is that big they’d put their whole chest in it. The racism is usually more insidious in the corporate world. The fact no one stopped it is bad enough.
So to that point if they were really horrible they might have done it thinking it would blow up and get coverage. But it’s a very weird way to get attention for an oral care product.

It's just a step to the white
You ain't white, you ain't right
You put ya white hand in...
If they're not THIS White, are they White enough?
Yes, we're capitalizing on, "White."
And
White teeth for the White people.

All of them are still in play for another month in the future.
