He won because of that, not despite it. That commitment is what kept people coming back to knock doors for him. The typical Democrat move of triangulating and apologizing would have killed all the enthusiasm for him.

He won not by trying to run to wherever the polls are, but by staying true to a message and persuading voters to come to his side, one conversation at a time. And of course, by having a message based around materially improving the lives of New Yorkers. Socialism!
