the obsession with finding the original version of "star wars" compared to other canonical films that have had (significant) changes over various releases is a great piece of evidence for "star wars" not being a film but a religious text

I don't know why, but it made me think of that scene in that 2002 Reign of Fire movie where Mathew McConaughey is trying to reenactment Star Wars for all the little kids who grew up hiding in a cave from dragons. Even at the end of the world we're still trying to share the Star Wars myth.
Imo not being able to get the originals on demand is at least part of the reason why. ‘True believers’ are given a quest to find the ‘authentic’ experience, giving the original movies a mystique that might’ve otherwise been lost in the dated special effects.
