Pope Leo XIV was close friends with Pope Francis. They shared concerns about the environment and outreach to the poor and migrants. He does not, however, appear to be as open minded as Francis on LGBTQ issues.

We, as the LGBT community, really need to stop giving a crap what people think of us. We need to demand respect, we are beautiful and the haters can go fuck themselves.
“Meeting people where they are” sounds like a similar belief as “Who am I to judge” that Pope Francis stood by.
“Meeting people where they are” is certainly more hopeful and helpful sounding from a church leader, than Evangelicals saying that anger and vengeance is the way to run governments .
If he respected pope Francis he must be moved about the chaos that's happening now and he might open his views now that pope Francis has passed :/ either way he's spoken about JD Vance in Feb about being wrong so I think it'll be okay 🥹
I will never forget the Jesuit seminarian begging my senior home room class to not leave the church after graduation becasue we wouldn’t be able to change the church from the outside
I think there is.
When I first heard 'an American' I was 😲
But learning, very quickly, more about his background and life, he does err more on the side of Francis than many of his peers. He was appointed as a cardinal by Francis
I’m so tired of the detrimental effects organized religion (not to be confused with, well, ya same thing) have had on human rights since their inception. There should be no middleman between you and your maker, and certainly not one that lies to you, takes your money and abuses your kids.
The hypocrisy of religion is astounding. So again not all people are equal and one guy will crucify who he deems not worthy. Not all life is respected. Great, just great. Ain’t American pope just great?!
The only thing out there is a 12 year old one off set of comments so anything can happen. He can still have the same view, he could have evolved. Once I see comments that are actually from this decade I'll concern myself with it.
In the meantime, he's def no fan of JD Vance; that's fact.
He did, and his papacy evolved well past that which is why I can't write this guy off based on a 12 year old drop in quote. That's a long time and I'm very curious to see if he's evolved past that. He was good friends with Francis and am trying to believe some of that rubbed off.
You seem to be painting with a very broad brush. Could it be that you don’t discuss the topic with enough Catholics?
Before anyone decides what Pope Leo believes, maybe we could let him tell us.
If he matches your prediction, which is likely, I’ll grant you, you can be proud of yourself.
I was reading an earlier post, it showed newspaper articles, children who were sexually abused and came forward and told this guy (Provost)? He did nothing to the Priests. They faced NO fallout or any type of discipline
The most disappointing Pope selection of my lifetime. Clearly, the cardinals voted with their egos- not hearts and souls. There were 3 amazing candidates that could have been world changers. :-(
Very disappointed in that. And I don’t understand. Just because the Bible says something doesn’t mean you must follow it. The Bible also advocates for slavery and stoning but there are no Catholic leaders saying “some slavery is okay” no!
Fawning over Pope Bob ignores that the Church is still one of the longest running criminal cons in human history.
Nuance on LGBT, ignoring women’s rights in general, or centuries of atrocities and wealth hoarding, isn’t really the headline we should be focused on. Still glad you pointed it out.
while definitely not as favourable as francis.. it does say that he showed mild support for “fiducia supplicans” - which seems to mean that he isn’t against same-sex couples.
If anyone is waiting for the Catholic church to embrace the gay community, you will probably be waiting for a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very long time.

I wouldn’t have him over for tea but I will channel John McClaine on this one and say, “Welcome to the party, pal!”
He gets the beating black heart of it:

And has criticised Vance very recently 😉

And the more time outside the US the better.
(I cover politics and social issues, focusing on fighting fascism and raising awareness about key injustices. Please follow me if interested!)
