All this is part of the "professionalization of childhood". I've read some amount of sociology on this, primarily tied to elite university admissions (grr). But other factors too (eg, stranger danger ⭢ more regimented sports), &c. Then in turn we infantalize adults (eg, some corporate interiors).
Being a kid is the last time, until post-tenure, you get to just do wacko things. As a kid I discovered interpreters, data structures, phonemes, and other random stuff for myself *because* I had no "research structure", just doodling on my own. How will NeurIPS measure that loss in their SOTAs?
