The government need to delink electricity from gas so that consumers can benefit from the true price of renewable energy @greenjennyjones.bsky.social While the government lacks the imagination to bring down bills, do agree with more public transport

I don't understand for the life of me why it is that gas/electricity markets don't get absolutely clobbered by most governments simultaneously for damages caused to their economies and societies. If the aim is "growth", what impedes it? Greed...
If disposable income is key to distribution and assisting businesses by giving people more money in their pockets, what impedes it? Greed...
There's a definitive pattern here and at the root of this is greed, my opinion is that this wild-west of market wrangling needs to be bought to heel posthaste
If prices are raised beyond a certain threshold, why shouldn't these companies be forced by law to pay for what harm they cause to economies? They are after all part of it and should be paying their way if they insist on dodging tax, causing wars and all to satiate their shareholders and CEO's
Across the globe, governments have got to get a grip on this runaway profiteering, it's been 3 years now, so many households have lost their ability to cope with this energy extortion. It is not a victimless crime, in fact it is a driver of crime, for which we are taxed to pay for prosecuting.
This is so much past the point of it being "it's just business", that it makes organized crime look tame by comparison. We can prosecute that, so why won't we prosecute the kingpins of this extortion racket? Because that is what it is.
This is where Lessez-Faire becomes a humanitarian crime.
decoulping wholesale electricity from gas prices could potentially deliver the elusive double digit economic growth Rachel Reeves so desperately needs.
Sustained long term 1.5-3% boost to GDP and 1-2% reduction in inflation would give the chancellor a lot of fiscal headroom. And the biggest impact would be on the poorest households.
It's madness that this hasn't been addressed sooner. Renewable energy is so much cheaper but the gains are being hidden in a cost of living crises. Also reducing electricity prices would help to encourage more people to switch to heat pumps and electric cars. Surely this is a win for all?!?
Have a vague memory (but can't find a link) that Miliband tried delinking shortly after taking office and the energy suppliers asked for a fixed rate on clean electricity over a decade to protect their profits and he walked away
This is crucial. If real low costs of renewables are to be clear to, and benefit consumers, we must separate them from gas.
If gas is highlighted by this, as a high polluting, high cost old fashioned fossil fuel, consumers will be happier to turn away from it.
The ‘true price’ of renewable elec includes the ‘back up’ generation that supports frequency response and security of supply (ask the Spanish and Portuguese). So by all mean decouple gas, but if you do, then you should include the cost of battery back up to the price of renewables.

The failure to do it
Shows just how much power the the oil lobby has
If stability is a goal, what impedes it? Greed...
