Yes. And along with Jm Crow there's the incarceration of Japanese Americans, the Know-nothing movement and prejudice against the Irish, the expulsion of the Chinese, the genocide against the indigenous population. What we are experiencing is pretty normative, really.

I find anecdotally that black Americans are the least likely to be underestimating what Trumpism is an extension of.

That said, is why I find doomerism so annoying. We've seen variations of this same problem over and over in different ways and it's also lost over and over (not without cost).

Southern states?? NY enslaved black captives till nearly 1830. NY had more enslaved black captives in 1776 than GA did. Jim Crow and voter suppression was rampant all over the country, NOT just in the South at all. The nation is still VERY segregated in numerous ways, not just the South.

Because the racism is so egregious, it’s undercommented how the Deep South was just a conventional authoritarian regime for about 65 years - elections rigged, almost all public offices held by insiders of a ruling party clique, public money funnelled to the private interests of said insiders
