The removal of vertical separation and introduction of traffic calming measures—including reduced width, serpentine pattern, and brick pavers—combine to create a more egalitarian and welcoming space; slowing drivers down, and giving people on foot free reign to move (and linger) in the public space.

Speaking from the Netherlands, I have never enjoyed these. It means there is no place where you can stand without a driver deciding you need to move out of their way. Sure they’re going slowly, but it’s a constant edge and never restful.

Here in the England bit of the UK we continue to see the amount of green shrinking, even in villages as trees are chopped back. I get the impression this is ostensibly for fear of damage to vehicles from falling branches and dropped leaves messing up their shiny skins. It just gets worse.

Nice! For more detail, an "erf" has a more secluded or sheltered meaning, as in "boeren-erf" is a farm yard. So a "woon-erf" could be a "living estate" or a "housing estate".
