idk i just think Aetherdrift is amazing work by the creative team and people could have fair criticisms of it that aren't just "i don't actually read the lore or look the cards"

My only critique of Aetherdrift's story was that Greasefang never showed up. She's a biker rat, this kind of thing is her whole deal!! Imagine her and her Nezumi gang racing with the Endriders to find a home that doesn't hate them
Well Magic is for everyone, some are only interested in how powerful cards are. Others are intrigued by lore or artworks. Some are interested in how some of these are interwoven.
Point is if you don't like something you may just not be the intended audience.
true! i don't care about the card game, so i don't comment on playability / impact on formats. my main frustration is with people criticizing the worldbuilding who seemingly don't care enough to actually look at the worldbuilding materials 😔
I myself am only interested in some parts of Magic but hey, I don't want to waste my time on criticizing even those I'm interested in, because, like, who cares? 😃
I buy when I like, and pass when I don't, the world won't end because I don't like a Magic set 😂
I think the set itself is sweet. It plays really uniquely with all the vehicles and mounts, while being a little too complicated for new people. Felt similarly about Duskmourn honestly.
I do think the "narrative hats" criticism is valid overall though, the throughline narratives are just marvel-y.
So far my flavor rankings of the Dragonstorm arc are
1: Duskmourn. Fuckin love Duskmourn.
2: Aetherdrift. Really feels like new and fresh usage of the omenpaths and a great exploration of the multiverse
3: Bloomburrow. I wasn't "wowed" by it as much as others, it's still good tho
Yea the world-building and story have been top notch. It’s so close to being a cool set, but a single cringe card really does kill the whole vibe. Abysmal mechanics don’t help either.
I read all the stories for Aetherdrift, and loved how the set was spread across 3 planes. Playing at the prerelease, I didn't enjoy the mechanics or gameplay of the set. It felt off.
I really love what the set has done for both Avishkar and Amenkhet. Both planes get positive steps forward, just kind of wish the overall story was better.
Because I think what best showed off how both of the planes were doing were the commander decks
Right?
The smallest amount of critical thinking reveals the depth and threads of so many common themes not only between characters, but between sets as things come together.
I do have a theory that a certain subset of players felt a type of way about seeing themselves in Sita's father...
I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the story saves what, on the face, looks really really dumb and bad. Unfortunately I'm still on MOM story because I don't get a lot of time to read.
Lovely progression of Daretti's character and family dynamics, I just wish I could get to see more perspectives!!! I loved seeing Amonkhet (the greatest idea for a comeback) and I'm dying to see more soft politics play out between planar rivals.
it should have been a amon ket return set thats where the most care seems to be in the set
i dont mind the atherspark
i get why people say that the theme feels silly but welcome to mgic
I think exhaust runs the risk of either being a really tedious to track mechanic, or a parasitic one. Especially cards that have more than one exhaust ability
Like I mean, I just got into MTG in December and I'm not big on the lore, but I like Aetherdrift a lot??? The flavor is cute and I like the mechanics. From what my one friend told me about the reception of some other sets, it really feels like some mtg players dont like when the designers have fun
I think the direction Magic has been going in of putting on Setting "hats" like cowboys, mobsters, and this time wacky races takes away as a whole from the depth Magic used to have in exploring their planes. Amonkhet is one of my favorite planes and the fact it's only partially used when Ixalan can
Bothers me so much and shows they rather hit certain genres or themes than actually cultivate planes that aren't skin deep. That isn't to say they can't have good stories inside of them, but it feels more like planes fell less lived in and more quirky places than before.
we've shifted to a bigger picture view of the multiverse since the start of the New Phyrexia Arc. i'm hoping for a return to more single plane focused sets too
I think aetherdrift sucked. I hate mtgkart the set. They could have gone with literally anything but nah man lets do go karts after thriller. What even is the lore doing rn anyway everyone just sends too be playing dress up in omenpath land.
Aetherdrift has a lot to do with interplanar politics. the new government of Avishkar wants to use the race to establish itself as an interplanar superpower through multinational sports the same way irl countries do with the olympics, for example.
See that’s neat but that plot wasn’t conveyed enough to players. All we the playerbase see is gokarts in our high fantasy trading card game, and recognizable marketable characters playing dress up.
