It's interesting how abstract the concept of ownership has become, wherein we still don't own what we pay for. That's my issue with ebooks, the obscure power to wipe away my collection in the hands of a tech lord.

I heard about this on Thursday and so spent the evening downloading a 252 from Amazon onto a USB drive. Friday night I converted them all to PDF via Calibre utilizing DeDRM. I then took 2 old WIN tablet PCs, wiped everything but a PDF reader & my books. Now I can even write on them.

While I was at it I ordered a Kobo Libre Color since Amazon never followed through with a colored Scribe & the ability to mark up any and all my books. Now I'm working on my Audible conversion.

I agree, but also they can definitely tell what books you have. Physical book stores have records of what you bought that they keep on the internet, just like ebook sellers.

I recently began reading many of the paper books I already own (and buying more). I immediately realized how much calmer & more comfortable I felt reading books that weren’t electronically spying on me! It surprised me how much I had suppressed that I knew I was being watched in online books.

Haven't been buying dead tree editions in a while because I have no where to shelve them and the ones I have are probably being eaten by bugs.

But yeah, I only buy unlocked epub or PDF or some other common format and keep 'em safe. Same with webcomics.

I will never own a Kindle on purpose.

I always buy paper books but find ebooks more comfortable to read.

I find a way to get unlocked epubs, and load them on my Kobo that I configured so it doesn’t snitch on me.

Thank you for justifying my 500 books. Another advantage is that they exist in a format that is unlikely to become inaccessible due to technological changes. If the publisher goes belly up, I will never have to search for a new program to be able to open them.
