I always start with standards. This helps me make decisions on what I need to do, what would be nice to do, and what I can ditch to make room for reflection or other learning.

I retired in June 2024. 36 total.
I taught HS math, all levels. The best planning I did was when I worked with a team of other math teachers. We’d use the text, standards from the district and state (CA), along with our past experiences. We’d take turns on writing assessments, making any handouts.

Newbie teacher (Year #2) & I've been criticized a lot for not enough "backwards design lesson planning" (standards 1st, resources 2nd). I tend to be more of a "forwards" person b/c I think literature 1st, standards 2nd & I am wondering what the "norm" is. I feel like it shouldn't matter which way.

I think when we start with literature, we’re prioritizing a specific book: the standards ask us to teach concepts, skills, & content. Literature is our avenue to get there, but selecting standards helps ensure I’m teaching all the standards and not just checking them off. I do love backwards design!

Seems the decisions about what’s wanted in a classroom always come from people not in the classroom. I mostly taught how I (or my colleagues) found success with my students. If they knew something better - show me. :)
