If they're not made in Japan, they're not Japanese RPGs. Terms like Story RPG describe that genre better for titles inspired by games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. This term has also been used in Japan.

I would agree but the ship has sailed. People will call it JRPG because it reminds them of JRPGs.

I wouldn't call Metroidvanias Metroidvanias but nobody calls them Search Action games and explaining it is far more complicated (and annoying) so I just run with Metroidvania.

While I'm aware that the ship has sailed, I believe that a discussion about genre terms can still be had. Heck, I started to refer to Metroidvanias as Search Action games when I learned more about their history and their connections to Action RPGs.

Totally understand that, I just believe it's the same discussion as the whole calling consoles gen 7,8,9 etc. On paper it makes more sense but the most people are simply confused by it. In a blog post for enthusiast I would use your way but in a post for wide range of people I believe the

And my take on genre is that we don't need them. Gaming diversified and inspired itself so much over the last 20 years that most games are just a giant clusterfuck of inspiration and takes on genres. So in my eyes we should just use them as a recommendation tool
