As legend goes he invited all leaders of divisive districts from all Hawaiian Islands for a conclave in Kawaihae on Hawai’i Island. Kauai leaders refused the invitation. At the feast King Kamehameha I slaughtered all leaders and became the premier King of Hawai’i.

His original statue, from 1912, stands in Kapa’au, N. Kohala on Hawai’i Island. Many texts about his birth, while his mother escaped Maui in a storm to give birth, little droplets of blood, a long trail from Puakea to Pololu Valley in N. Kohala have great cultural meaning. Wayfaring showed the way.
