private, for-profit American-owned businesses wanted to maintain plantations (L. Am.), resource extraction (Africa, Western Asia), or simply did not want a successful alternative to threaten American capitalist hegemony (Asia).

Only a handful today (China, Cuba, Vientnam...). China is the greatest success story with 60% of their corporations either all or partly state-owned and the rest have to have communist party members on their boards to make sure the business privileges the public good over the profit-motive.

I agree with the sentiments here, there were huge drawbacks to both keeping things open & closing. And I think letting scientists and healthcare professionals have more time & full support & garnering public support through clear communication & education, would have been great, but also impossible.

But what would it really look like? Also, how do you bring those of economic might, hierarchical power, to the table without bloodshed and violence? In other words, I understand where it evolved and the horrors it has created, but how do we mold a more equitable system and society?
