I'm not saying we necessarily need another D but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about Reinbacher's development after this injury considering how Dach looks coming back from a similar one

I'm not saying write him off but maybe have a backup plan in case this injury completely derails his development. It'd suck if after all this effort the rebuild falls apart because this injury derailed the development of our top RD

Matheson is a good dman. Guhle is great. Xhekaj and Struble are playing much better than earlier in the season. Hutson will be a star. I don’t think defence is a big issue right now.

I’m not worried about the D, it’ll work itself out when Mailloux and Reinbacher are ready. Reinbacher shutdown RD, Mailloux offensive RD. The defence has come a long way already since the start of the season imo and the young guys are growing. A 2C is the major need if Dach can’t find his game

IMO when they acquired Laine, it was for a boost this yr, but really for '25. There was always a chance Dach bounced back better than he did - having a regular offseason (was healthy in APR)

But he hasn't - let's see how he's looking in the 2nd half and judge then, but a contingency is in order

Everything has been a long term and cerebral approach by this management group.

It's funny - I really like how they draft, but I'm questioning trades of NHL talent they have brought in (Dach and Newhook don't look like winners). The way they draft - maybe they should've held onto the picks?

They have Mailloux. They play Guhle on the right side too.

They just introduced a 26 minute muncher rookie of the year candidate on the left side.

Their goal differential this season is minus 23. That entire differential is the second line. Dach is minus 21.

How are those same D all plus players when the other lines are on?

I agree totally. I still think the Reinbacher pick was a reach with Michkov on the board (even Leonard) despite whatever the perceived issues were at the time with him not wanting to play in MTL or a delayed stay in Russia or whatever. He fell to us in the draft and we passed on him. #Fail #Habs

Because they want it now! I agree that having a black hole of a second line kills this team. Other coaches can exploit matchups and as we have seen, habs wind up playing entire shifts, plus, in their own end.

Don't try to understand people.. people have been trying to trade Matheson for a while, which would result in replacing Matheson with Hutson for the exact same amount of points, and complain about the amount of local boys on the team.

Good points you make on the second line Brian. Hopefully the #Habs figure this thing out before it’s too late. I agree they didn’t trade for Laine just to see the season get washed away. I’m thinking let’s give Dach another few games to build chemistry with his 2 wingers.

i still believe dach will be a good player for us but it certainly isn't working right now. this isn't a horrible team, going out and getting a guy who can play as a 2c if the price is right would make a lot of sense

The secondary scoring issue hurts a lot, but I don't see Hughes making the trades that fix it. Dvorak would need to go without salary retention + they'd need to pay up for a credible 2C. Potentially paying for a salary dump × premium cost of a C seems a lot to try to be a bit more competitive.

That's why I don't think there's a solution ATM. A C acquisition means Dvorak goes(likely paying to avoid cap retention) and a C who can fix the 2nd line is not going to be acquired for peanuts. You can trade for a struggling player, but if that goes south Hughes is back where he started.

How many Cs traded last year were of the quality that would help MTL though? Monahan, Lindholm, Hertl and Mittelstadt are probably the only ones and none of them were cheap.

You need a 2C since the Kirby Dach experiement isn't working, and you need a top 4 D in his prime to replace Savard and give the team stability.

They are 30th, they need a lot of help.
