I recently moved over to Fedora Linux and I've been loving it, it took a very miniscule amount of setup and it works great. Best thing you can do though is to try things out and see what works for you specifically, I ended up choosing Fedora because I really liked the KDE desktop environment

Linux mint is an open source OS that’s very user similar to windows. Main drawback with Linux systems (other than the stark differences from Windows) are that sometimes hardware manufacturers don’t write drivers for Linux (Realtek WiFi cards ex.)

Debian is the most community-ish distro of Linux. Ubuntu is based on it and a lot of issues, problems, etc. that you could get or find while using was most certainly fixed by somebody else

Now, you could also choose elementaryOS which is made by a trans woman (and the prior thing about troubleshooting applies). You might also be tempted to use proton or wine which are windows layers compatibility for Linux ("windows emulators") for certain software not natively avaliable for Linux.

I personally use Fedora, but that's because... well the v i b e s are just right (and I also I understand it better), but Debian, elementaryOS and Ubuntu are more friendly to new users ^_^

Heyo!
My best suggestion is to make a list of the apps you use the most, then look at which Linux distro supports them all and makes using those the easiest. Ubuntu probably will be easiest.

Wine or Proton can help run WIN apps otherwise.

Mint and Ubuntu are good if you just want to load someone up and get working. I personally use NixOS because you get to setup your machine declaratively (rather than running a bunch of npm commands) but it does require more troubleshooting / config knowledge

Linux Mint has a good default experience. DaVinci Resolve and Kdenlive are both great options for video editing on Linux.

For ease of use some flavour of ubuntu is my suggestion. I've heard good things about Mint but couldn't say myself. I've not been able to get Arena working myself either.

Linux Mint, or Pop_OS! Are really good right out of the box. If you want a new hobby and time sink you can try out EndeavourOS. If you're moving to Linux do not ignore the command line!

i've been very happy with pop os for a number of years now; if you work with multiple windows open at once, the built in tiling mode is lovely. it's also rather pretty, and there's a new desktop environment coming soon™ that promises to be very nice

Linux Mint is best in class for Windows converts, myself included. Feels like all the best of Windows 7 and the install experience from boot drive is quick and easy.

I'm a freak with a stupid amount of experience with several dozen different Linux Distros. Lots of people recommending Linux Mint - it's ok. I'd have different recommendations based on what is important for you to get out of your machine (gaming, application variety, privacy, etc), so lmk

Linux is the right answer here, but if you want a "as windows as possible" feeling OS, or just something that feels familiar, I would recommend Arch. I've heard great things, very customizable and user friendly though I have not used it myself so I can't say for sure but I've heard great things

Yeah I've had similar feelings since the announcement of them dropping Windows 10 support. Combined with an actual human rights violation I'm now desperate to find a viable alternative. Kind of feels like the situation with Twitter's enshitification, where we have our Mastadon alternative (Linux).

bit late but if you end up using Linux it can be quite a learning curve. Make sure you figure out how to update your OS and do it fairly often to make sure things don't stop working

Mint is probably your best bet for ease of use, but if you have programs where you *need* windows for something, there are a few ways to avoid giving them money. I have a secondary set up with windows and I haven't given Microsoft a cent.

I've been using Fedora specifically the KDE Plasma version for years, it's simple to download and install and if you're used to Windows UI it's a simple change as it's pretty much the same with some improvements and Fedora is a well supported and stable linux OS.

I would second Fedora and Mint Recomendations. Arch is for people that have experience with Linux and want to fine tune the shit out of it.

Keep in mind that there is an adjustment period. Also you will need to look into alternatives for the programs that you use regularly that are not supported.
