It’s also the 101st anniversary of the unfortunate demise of William Kennedy, 20, killed by a coconut – but not because it fell on his head (the usual method). No, William was a resident of Pennsylvania, not noted for its palm trees, and died a rather more... American death
He’s a mere minor detail on the Wikipedia page dedicated to the coconut palm’s determined efforts over the centuries (the first documented case being in 1777) to murder unwitting humans
“Mature coconut palms”, you see, “may have a height of 24 up to 35 meters and an unhusked coconut may weigh 1 to 4 kg”, so “blows to the head of a force exceeding 1 metric ton are possible”
...but obviously the most important news of the day is that it’s 48 years and a day since the Sex Pistols outraged a blushing, innocent nation, giving rise to a legendary headline on this day in 1976
She’s the most lovely person in real life too. She sang Vera Lynn songs at the D-Day 75th anniversary memorial, to which my grandmother was invited as a war veteran. Afterwards she was amazingly generous with her time with those attending. She really couldn’t have been kinder with them.
