Growing up as a kid in the 70s, I never really liked Bob Monkhouse. Celebrity Squares would be something my grandparents would watch. When I got into my late teens, I began to appreciate that far from being just a quizmaster, he was a great comedian. I miss his sharp wit.
This guy doing the phone-in round was terrible, nowhere near the target.
I asked him what's going on, and he said his TV had been repossessed.
"Well, how on earth can you see the target?"
"I'm in a phone box outside Rumbelows, but people keep getting in the way."
That’s in the book! Glorious stuff. Eventually, it turns out that all the TVs in the shop window are tuned to BBC1, and he can’t see Monkhouse at all, so he has to guess when to take the shot, and wins. I do wonder if he embellished a little, but it’s a fabulous story
