Saying as the tree took 500 years to grow perhaps a fair price for its destruction is 500 years of the CEO's salary put into preserving trees nationwide. A CEO of a company that size probably gets a couple million a year so a billion should begin to cover it

Sorry is a pretty cheap word.
If a reasonable stump is left, then the best "sorry" would be to allow it to regenerate which it would. Unless it's a fake sorry and they want it gone.
