Change the wage rules first. Service workers need a living wage and until that is the law, then tipping, in cash, directly to the server, is the only way to pay them sufficiently. It IS an expectation of their employer which is passed on to you. Don't like that? Do something to change it.

Tipping has gotten out of hand. Pin pads start at 20% instead of 10%. If I’m standing I don’t tip.

Exactly. I tip less now when the machine starts at 18% and it’s always met with total attitude from waiters (it’s still a 13-15% tip!). So done with it all. I’m old enough to remember when 10% tip was fine for good service, 15% was for great. Now it’s like 22%. F that.

We found out our delivery drivers get none of the tips when you tip when paying by credit card or etransfer. The owner keeps them all. Cash tips at the door? The drivers can keep it because the owner doesn't know.

Tipping is part of the reason we just don't eat out as much as we used to. It is an extra that is not worth the cost. BC had a servers wage because they got tips, but now they get minimum wage plus. Never got tips at any of my jobs, I still gave the great customer service I was paid to give.
