My sister was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last year. Obviously she could no longer work, so lost her health insurance a month after her diagnosis. She was then destitute, so eligible for Medicaid. She applied for Disability, but couldn’t receive it because then she’d be ineligible for Medicaid.

A disability attorney told me that 3 years is not uncommon to get approved for disability. *But if you do any kind of work during those years, even light duty & temporary, you're highly unlikely to be approved.

My starting pay, in 1980 in TX was $12,000 which included a stipend and 15 extra days. I retired with a MM in 2012 making about $72,000 with the stipend, 15 extra days and an additional supplement. Not too bad, but not what other "professionals" make.

Wow - that is shockingly unfair. In Canada, provinces differ on teacher salaries only by 5-8 thousand, and we are all unionized. So, in BC, while we start low-ish ($65,000/y), we top out at $110,000 within 10 years (with an MA/MEd, etc.). We have had to strike at times, but it was always worth it.

Have yearly regular blood tests if you can; that’s my only advice ♥️. I was generally healthy when diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2014, and beat the odds. When I was in school a teacher I had also was a member of our church. After years of teaching he left to become a bread truck delivery driver. He made a lot more money doing that than teaching. I know he loved teaching. He was great.

I taught for 36 years in Texas. Retiring and get rehired was the only way I got enough to pay down my mortgage. I made about $4k my final year but just had a bachelor. Getting a masters was too costly and not worth it. Instead I attend over 200 hours in workshops to learn new material.

1) Of how badly behaved the kids are now. They were assaulted on campus, with next to zero admin support and a poor security response.

2) They got paid better doing accounting / payments work for a college. Non-degree related position.

Private music teacher

And I had a waiting list where I could have made more. I also had time to do my own performing. That brought in another 20-40k annually.
