Though I understand how it turned very ‘arcadey’ and lost a lot of the aesthetic that was present in 2016, so I understand why Eternal turned people off.
The doom community will tell you the same thing
In 2 years retrospectives will start to appeaer, revising it as a "still a decent, if maybe too innovative" Doom game, after massive Zenimax layoffs a year before.
Eternal had far more engaging design
We are not the same.
Also yes the game is absolutely chess like, the cacodemon example is a historically weak argument
I beat it on the hardest difficulty, the game is not very engaging at high levels of play because ultimately you just know what to do to instantly beat the enemies
It's systems are some of the deepest among any fps game ever and look how it made the doom community explode into what it is now.
If you don't like it, that's fine.
Not only has the hype behind the series died down a bit, but from what I’ve played so far I kinda feel like this shoulda been a Quake Reboot instead.
The slightly slower pace and greater focus on melee and weapon combos would have been a nice way to separate the 2 series
