I've been working with a fantastic team for months to make this second edition of Meet Your Mayor happen, this time with participation from @gothamist.com. Epic thanks to @mhollie.bsky.social, Sam Rabiyah, @maiahibbett.bsky.social, @richardkimnyc.bsky.social and Diana Riojas.
This is the first question & where I stopped: where is the “Scale back the swamping of our sidewalks by ending or limiting outdoor dining” option? Why does this assume that we who live in NYC don’t want our sidewalks, streets, & parks back? smh
Well these canned, simplistic non-solutions lack creativity, fail to ask what ppl want, beg Q on alternatives, fail to see combo options—e.g., Rikers/NYPD reform—& presume mud-wrestling match of pandering soundbytes: I think our candidates are smarter/better (except divisive Cuomo/corrupt Adams).
How do you propose drawing the candidates out of the comfort zones in which they have been campaigning, seeking endorsements of interest groups that have built consensus in many areas and demand litmus tests in exchange for endorsement consideration? For better or worse those groups define terms.
IDK answer—but when I hear some of them, they're smart & principled & can grasp need, e.g., for taking on CO & PD unions (end placard abuse, etc). If they run by checking interest group boxes, we're lost. But how abt journos asking these Q's? I wld do so if I were in Q&A setting: a convo is needed.
The mayor has so much control over public schools, why have only two education questions, and one of them about an issue that is out of the mayor's hands?
We had considered one about how to deal with shrinking school populations but it's not really an issue candidates have engaged in. What multiple choice, pick-one question would you have wanted to see? (The SHSAT at five of the eight schools is very much in the mayor's hands, reflected in an answer.)
Yeah, I agree that its the candidates that aren't talking about this issue as much as the press. What about expansion of afterschool or early-childhood programs? Or promoting antiracism efforts despite federal threats? Or screened middle schools?
Interesting. The quiz results are not the person I will support. Because while I agree with them on some things, there is one big red flag against them.
