"I am literally neurodivergent and a minor and I do this to cope" except it's for any fleeting marginalization the person has suffered and it's to excuse hundreds if not thousands of people displaying the same boring, boilerplate bigotries en masse.

And like. Yes. You have not had an easy life. Very few people in fandom have. Doesn't mean we - collectively! - should make fanspaces - shared communities - more difficult for others to navigate!

I would absolutely spare more empathy for people's individual issues if they weren't using them as a weapon to minimize collective empathy for those even more marginalized by Fandom At Large, or to silence/harass those attempting to have discussions about making fanspace safer for more people.

(this doesn't even touch on the fact that some source canon doesn't even HAVE in-universe bigotries that reflect real-world ones, and yet characters of identities that are marginalized irl STILL get dismissed/erased/vilified by fandom in predictable ways)

Yep. Over on Mastodon, when I wrote one of the threads recently talking about how rape is treated in fiction, I got a Head Empty No Thoughts comment about how well Some People Are Turned On By Rape In Fiction.

Like, okay? I'm talking about how rape culture influences fiction, though.

Yeah I think some people see any discussion of one of their Pet Topics and then their mouth just opens and a pre-loaded response falls out. That's why I hate the pro/anti thing so so much, there's no room for nuance or a genuine engagement with the topic, just stock jabs from both sides.
