I'm honestly baffled by the idea that Obsidian (Pentiment, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, New Vegas...) needs to make steps with its writing, seemingly almost entirely based off Outer Worlds and maybe Avowed not hitting the same highs

I don't agree Avowed was badly written, certainly not in the same way Outer Worlds could be off-putting!
But both - and especially Outer Worlds - clearly represent an attempt at the kind of mainstream appeal Bethesda's first-person RPGs have had and I don't think that writing has been stronger.
the main characters and primary story of Outer Worlds 1 was ok but shows that maybe Obsidian is better at continuing other people's universes than building their own
but they are owned by Microsoft so it really barely matters
Yeah, sadly I won't be playing their new stuff for the duration of the BDS boycott. I didn't get chance to finish Avowed actually since I cancelled my Game Pass sub - maybe the story falls apart in the later stages but I was invested in what I'd played.
No worries! In hindsight I was also jumping to conclusions but we've ended up understanding
Re: MS and art - totally, & I think that's what I left unsaid further up the thread. Outer Worlds/Avowed both seem like maybe they were pressured to have broader appeal and the writing suffered for it

it is also just hard to imagine really good things coming out of MS these days, they are more interested in LLMs than art
