Alan Shepard stepped from a trailer into the dark as searchlights illuminated his Redstone rocket. Flight Director Chris Kraft felt a wave of excitement as Shepard looked up at the rocket; light reflecting off his silver suit – he *looked* like a 'spaceman'.
