2. There is a VERY generous auto aim. This puts the emphasis on maneuvering with the heavy inertia, high mass ships with a lot of momentum, coupled with all the powerful weapons being low rate of fire.

It's just based off the ship's forward. The HUD makes it seem like there's more to it with the part that turns red, but there doesn't seem to be. Just point the ship in the general direction of the lead marker and it gimbals. If it falls out of the gimbal range, it just shoots forwards.
I remember playing that game when I was a teenager, trying to learn how to fly and fight effectively. Circle strafing with a cutting beam on large ships was so key.
