So the blending is (in the prototype at least) hardcoded in the manual mode. It's based on your speed, and when at a standstill your throttle is distributed 100% to the lift engines. When you're above a certain speed (IIRC 50 m/s) throttle is 100% main engines. It interpolates between the two. - ThreadSky

Is it just any speed that contributes to this? I.e. if I thrust from a standstill on the ground, I start to get some forward momentum without any other inputs?

On the HUD, the FWD parameter tells you how much "forward blend" there is. It's pretty sensitive. Since it doesn't distinguish between forward and vertical velocity, just lifting off starts to add some forward thrust, and then it compounds on itself as you pick up speed.

Exactly how this value gets set, I'm still thinking about tweaking, but I'm also wondering if maybe it becomes obsolete altogether in the new control scheme, which has a "strafe up/down" bound to the Y axis on the right stick to deal with space.

That said, the normal mode is mainly designed for forward flight, and the "forward blend" was just how I initially had it set up that worked well enough before I added the purpose built hover flight control laws. The final game will have a more traditional airplane built around it.

The most difficult part with landing in the normal mode is just slowing down to get below those thresholds. Putting down the gear can slow you down quicker, but IIRC there isn't a way in the prototype to command reverse thrust.

I talked with a friend about this, since their first instinct was to try landing in normal mode too, and they had trouble slowing down. Eventually they figured out doing it in auto mode, and just used that to slow down. I kinda wonder about an airbrake or something, but I want to keep things simple.
