This is the kind of thing that's very easy for normies to say. If I didn't mask, I would simply have no friends and be unable to get a job. I think social norms are stupid and hypocritical. But I need to learn and adapt, because we live in a society.
Accepting what we are is necessary in deciding who we wish to be. We can and must rewrite the worst parts of ourselves.
But that dissonance between self concept and social self concept can change via cognitive restructuring and habituation.
"False self" is also just the term, the theory itself describes exactly what you wrote in the 2nd paragraph :)
Instead, it should be "practicing sociable behaviors."
The harm doesn't come from changing our behavior, it comes from the fear that changing our behavior is a betrayal of our "true" identity. You just need to update your self-concept.
